Easy Refashion Project : Turn a Dress Into a Skirt

We may find many items in our wardrobe that has worn and torn, or simply did not fit our current size anymore. Before we throw away and put it in recycle bin, let's take a second look, a second thought and maybe give it another chance for a second life, especially if we love the fabric, or the color, or the print so much. Think it as doing our part, our way of trying to save our planet from textile waste by adding more waste to the already enormous textile landfill.

Today I want to share my refashion project (an easy one) by turning a dress into a skirt, if we don't have a dress that we'd like to work with, we could always find one in a thrift shops for a minimum price tag.

For this project we will need :

  • an old dress

  • fabric scissors

  • measuring tape

  • exposed elastic about 4 cm (1,5 inch) width and the length = size of your waist (mine is approx. 75 cm/29 inch)

  • sewing machine

  • twin needle (or a standard sewing needle if you don't have it, just make sure you switch to stretch stitch in your sewing machine, ex. using a zigzag stitch)

Start by cutting the dress starting from under the arm holes (width) that's where the bust line normally sits, and usually the bust size is bigger than waist size. Then measure the length equally from hemline to bust line, mark with pencil or tailor chalk, then cut. Here I show you where I cut it :

Measure the waist, cut the elastic band according to the waist size and join both ends together (to make a elastic belt). Mark 4 points on the elastic according to : center back, center front, and both side seams. Sew the elastic belt to the fabric on the right side using the twin needle by stretching it to match each points as we sew, it can be tricky to do so, I suggest we go slowly and carefully.

When we finish sewing the elastic all around the waist, then we're done! that's all we need to do and we can proudly wear our "new" skirt!
